Asteroids

Asteroids, sometimes called minor planets, are rocky, airless remnants left over from the early formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago.

Potentially Hazardous Asteroid

There are over 32,000 known near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) orbiting around Earth. Of which two asteroids are considered as  most hazardous known asteroids in our solar system.

Asteroid Bennu

Bennu asteroid is 1,610-foot-wide cosmic object believed to be taller than the Empire State Building. It was discovered in 1999 and classified as a "Near-Earth object"

Close Encounters

Bennu passes near Earth every six years and had three close encounters with Earth in 1999, 2005 and 2011.

Year 2182

Scientists believe that asteroid Bennu could hit our planet by 2182, 159 years from now. Although chances of hitting are very less i.e. 1 in 2,700, or 0.037%

Destruction

Could release 1,200 megatons of energy if it hits our planet, i.e., 24 times more powerful than the most powerful nuclear weapon ever built
