Asia Cup 2023 will be hosted by two nations Pakistan and Sri Lanka from August 30 to September 17. Total six Asian countries are participating in the tournament, divided into two groups, with the two top sides from each group will qualify for ‘Super 4’. It will be served as rehearsal for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which is going to start from 5th October 2023.

History of Asia Cup

The first Asia Cup was hosted by UAE in 1984, where India emerged as victorious under captainship of Little Master Sunil Gavaskar in its inaugural edition beating Sri Lanka. The last i.e. 15th edition was also hosted by UAE, where Sri Lanka beat Pakistan and clinched the title sixth time in Asia Cup History.

From above table it is clear that, India with seven wins leading the table for most victorious nations in Asia cup, followed by Sri Lanka with 6 titles, then Pakistan with only 2 titles.

Asia Cup 2023 – Format ODI or T20I??

This year Asia Cup will be played in ODI format. The previous tournament was of T20I format. The last time this tournament played in 50 overs format was in 2018, where India defeated Bangladesh at UAE.

Asia Cup 2023-Schedule

The tournament will be played between six teams – India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. First time in the history of the Asia Cup, it will be jointly hosted by two countries, Pakistan & Sri Lanka.

These six teams are divided into two groups ‘Group A’ & ‘Group B’.

Total 13 matches will be played in the tournament divided into three stages; Group Stage, Super Fours & Finals. In Group stage, each team will be playing against other teams in the group. Two teams from each group will advance to ‘Super Fours’. Here, each team clash with each other in single round, and top two teams from this stage will qualify for the final.

India Vs Pakistan – One? Two or Three clashes??

The traditional rivals India and Pakistan will be playing their first match on 2nd September at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy, Sri Lanka in a Group A match. The two teams will meet again in the Super Fours stage. If both teams tops the table in super four stage, then they will meet in the final match at Colombo, on 17th September, and that will be their third encounter in the tournament.

Asia Cup 2023 – Team India

Led by former India cricketer Ajit Agarkar, BCCI’s selection committee has picked up 17-member squad for the tournament. According to Asian Cricket Council, each teams participating in tournament have the provision of picking a 17-member squad. Pakistan & Bangladesh have already announced their 17-member team.

The two top performing players Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul underwent surgeries this year, which is cause of concern for Indian side ahead of Asia Cup 2023.

Today (21st August,2023), Ajit Agarkar with Indian skipper Rohit Sharma formally announced 17 member team in a press conference in New Delhi.

Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul both are included in final 17, which means both are fit and can play. This is good news for team India.

“Shreyas Iyer is completely fit, KL Rahul is having a niggle, That is why Sanju is travelling. We expect him to be fit, he is well on track,” says Agarkar.

When asked about the Chahal, chief selector Ajit Agarkar replied, “You can’t fit in two wrist spinners and at the moment Kuldeep is ahead of Chahal”

India Squad For ICC Men’s World Cup 2023

The form and fitness of the players playing in Asia Cup will be crucial ahead of ICC Men’s World Cup 2023. World Cup matches will kick start from 5th October 2023, with India playing its first match on 8th October against Australia.

India is yet to announce its squad for ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The due date to submit provisional 15-member squad to the ICC is September 5. However, as per the rules, up to 27th September changes can be made.
