MBMC Biogas Initiative 2024: Harnessing the Power of Waste!

MBMC Biogas Initiative 2024

MBMC Biogas Initiative 2024: The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has embarked on a groundbreaking journey towards sustainability by initiating the generation of electricity from biogas plants. With four out of the proposed seven plants already operational, the MBMC is paving the way for eco-friendly waste management and renewable energy production in the twin-city.

Revolutionizing Waste Management By MBMC

The MBMC’s biogas plants signify a paradigm shift in waste management practices. These plants have a collective capacity to recycle wet garbage, averaging 50 tonnes per day (TPD), into biogas, which can generate 275 kilovolt-amps (kVA) of electricity when processing 100 percent segregated waste.

With a total recycling capacity of 100 TPD across all seven plants, the MBMC aims to generate 575 kVA of electricity, significantly reducing the environmental footprint of waste disposal while harnessing renewable energy sources.

Technology Adoption and Sustainable Solutions

MBMC Biogas Initiative 2024: The MBMC has adopted advanced technology developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to facilitate bio-methanation, a process that decomposes organic waste and converts it into methane. This methane gas is then utilized to generate electricity, promoting sustainable energy practices and reducing dependency on conventional power sources.

Civic Chief Sanjay Katkar emphasizes the importance of decentralizing the waste management system, advocating for citizen participation in segregating household garbage at its source. This grassroots approach not only minimizes the volume of waste processed centrally but also contributes to the success of the biogas project and promotes environmental stewardship among residents.

Integration with the Grid: A Step Towards Energy Independence

While the generated energy currently meets the needs of the four operational plants, the MBMC seeks approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to transmit surplus energy to the grid of service providers. Under the gross metering model, excess energy transmitted to the grid earns credits for future electricity consumption across other administrative units of the MBMC.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Kalpita Pimple underscores the significance of this initiative in enhancing energy efficiency and reducing monthly electricity expenses. By leveraging biogas-generated power, the MBMC aims to optimize resource allocation and promote fiscal responsibility within the municipal budget.

Fuel Savings and Environmental Benefits

Beyond energy generation, the decentralization of waste management operations yields substantial fuel savings by minimizing transportation costs associated with ferrying garbage to central processing plants. Each truck, carrying three tons of waste, makes approximately 33 trips to transport 100 TPD garbage over a distance of nearly 9 kilometers to the processing plant in Uttan.

In addition to mitigating environmental impact, this initiative addresses the challenge of industrial and biomedical waste, further advancing the twin-city’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

Looking Ahead: Towards a Greener Future

As the MBMC continues to expand its biogas infrastructure and integrate renewable energy sources into its operations, the twin-city stands poised to lead by example in sustainable urban development. Through innovative technologies, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, the MBMC is laying the foundation for a greener, more resilient future, where waste becomes a valuable resource and sustainability drives progress.
