History of Asian Games

First Asian Games were organised way back in 1951 in New Delhi, India. Since 1982, the Asian Games have been organized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). These Games hold recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and are often referred to as the second-largest multi-sport event globally, following the Olympic Games.

Throughout the history of the Asian Games, nine different nations have had the privilege of hosting the event. A total of 46 nations have actively participated in the Games, with Israel being notably excluded from the competition after its last participation in 1974. The most recent edition of the Games took place in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, from August 18 to September 2, 2018. The current Asian Games 2022, being played in 2023, hosted in Hangzhou, China.

Since the year 2010, host cities have been responsible for managing both the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games. The Asian Para Games provide a platform for athletes with disabilities to compete among themselves. These two events are typically held in succession, with the Asian Para Games immediately following the Asian Games. However, it’s important to note that the exclusion of the Asian Para Games from any Asian Games host city contract ensures that both events will run independently of each other.

Which Games are played?

Fifty-one sports, spanning 39 different disciplines and nearly 400 events, have been part of the Asian Games program at one point or another, including the 2018 Games in Indonesia. Eight extremely popular sports in Asia are in the program, plus up to seven chosen by the local organization.
