Navi Mumbai: Free Travel Delight for Senior Citizens
In a heartwarming move, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has announced free travel for senior citizens aboard Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) buses, effective from Diwali onwards. This decision comes in response to an appeal by senior citizens to Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, who assured them that their demand for complimentary travel would be considered.

NMMT, a pivotal transportation entity, operates 567 buses across 74 routes, catering to approximately 1.80 lakh passengers daily. Navi Mumbai: Senior Citizens’ Demand
The demand for free travel for seniors gained momentum during a senior citizens’ day program at the Vishnudas Bhave auditorium in Vashi. In response to the appeal made by seniors to Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar, he affirmed that the matter would be addressed at the administrative level, demonstrating a commitment to the welfare of the elderly population.
Implementation Process and Considerations
Municipal Commissioner Narvekar shared insights into the implementation process, stating, “We are studying the percentage of senior citizens in the total passenger traffic. We will also take a call on the senior citizen age to be fixed for the facility.” The policy, he assured, would be finalized very soon, paving the way for implementation and a potential Diwali launch.

To avail themselves of this complimentary travel benefit, senior citizens are required to obtain an NMMT identity card. The application process involves providing proof of age through a date of birth certificate or Aadhaar card. Residency within the NMMC area must be substantiated with documents such as a property tax document, an agreement copy for leased residences, or a Tehsildar’s certificate demonstrating a minimum of five years of residency. The completion of this process results in the issuance of the Transport Activity Identity Card.
Senior Citizen: Mumbai Metro 25% Ticket Concession
This initiative aligns with the broader trend of facilitating senior citizen travel. Mumbai Metro lines 2A and 7, as of May 1, 2023, offer a 25% fare concession for citizens aged above 65, persons with disabilities, and students up to Class 12. This concession is applicable to National Common Mobility Card (Mumbai One) holders for 45 or 60 trips. Eligibility documentation includes valid disability certificates for persons with disabilities, age proof for senior citizens, and PAN cards with school IDs for students.
