The Sacred Stones of Padlya Village

Madhya Pradesh Family Discovers Dinosaur Eggs: In the heart of Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar, the Mandaloi family of Padlya Village has been venerating palm-sized “stone balls” for generations. These seemingly ordinary stones held a special place in their hearts, worshipped as “Kakar Bhairav” or lords of the land. Families across Dhar and neighboring areas shared similar beliefs, considering these totems as protectors of their farmland and cattle, known as ‘Kuldevta’ or sacred totems.

Madhya Pradesh Family Discovers Dinosaur Eggs

Recently, during a field visit by experts from Lucknow’s Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, the Mandaloi family and others were in for a surprise. The revered “stone balls” were not stones at all but fossilized eggs of the Titanosaurus species of dinosaurs. These eggs, considered sacred totems, turned out to be relics from a bygone era.

Titanosaurus: The Titanic Lizard of Ancient Times

The Titanosaurus, the first Indian dinosaur to be named and described, made its mark around 70 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. As one of the largest dinosaurs ever recorded, this “titanic lizard” was a majestic presence in the region. In January of this year, researchers discovered over 250 eggs of the Titanosaurus in the Narmada Valley, MP’s Dhar district. You can read more about Titanosaurus on the link: Titanosaurus

Groundbreaking Discoveries by Researchers

Earlier this year, a study published in the scientific journal PLOS One detailed the extensive field research conducted by a team from Delhi University and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Bhopal. The researchers uncovered 92 nesting sites containing 256 fossil eggs belonging to Titanosaurs, shedding light on the lives of these long-necked sauropods that once inhabited the region over 66 million years ago.

Multi-Shell Eggs: A World First

The findings, authored by Harsha Dhiman, Vishal Verma, and Guntupalli Prasad, included the groundbreaking discovery of ovum-in-ovo or multi-shell eggs. This was the first time in the world that a multi-shell egg of a reptile had been discovered, providing valuable insights into the nesting habits of both birds and reptiles.

Connecting the Past with the Present

The revelation of these sacred totems being dinosaur eggs highlights the intriguing connection between faith, culture, and the rich history embedded in the earth. What once served as symbols of protection for the Mandaloi family and others in the community have now become windows into an ancient world, showcasing the fascinating coexistence of dinosaurs and human reverence.

As Madhya Pradesh’s Padlya Village grapples with the awe-inspiring realization that their cherished totems are remnants of a prehistoric era, the story unfolds as a testament to the surprises that lie buried beneath the surface, waiting to be unearthed by both science and faith alike.
