CSMT Metro Station to Connect with Existing Railway Station
In an effort to improve connectivity and prevent overcrowding, the railway and state government in Mumbai are exploring ways to link the proposed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Metro Station of Mumbai Metro Line 3 to the existing CSMT railway station. The discussions emphasize the need for a smart connection that not only meets current demands but also anticipates future needs.
Exploring Connectivity Options
CSMT Metro Station to Connect with Existing Railway Station: Recent meetings between railway and state government officials have opened discussions on various connectivity options. One proposed option involves using the existing Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) subway to connect the new CSMT Metro Station with the current CSMT railway station. However, authorities are also considering a second option to address potential overcrowding concerns.
New Subway Proposal
Under the second option, plans are being developed to construct a new subway connecting the proposed CSMT Metro Station to platform number one of the existing CSMT railway station, near the Himalaya bridge. The Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA) has presented this proposal to the Central Railway, highlighting that the new connection will move forward if found feasible.
Objectives of the Proposed Subway
Railway officials state that the purpose of the proposed subway is not only to facilitate a seamless interchange between the metro and railway systems but also to reduce the risk of congestion, especially in the already crowded BMC subway. Recognizing the importance of this infrastructure project, the RLDA, state government, and railway authorities are working together to find a practical solution.

Mumbai Metro Line 3 Status
Mumbai Metro Line 3 Phase 1 Status
In the journey towards completion, Phase 1 of Mumbai Metro Line 3, stretching from Aarey Colony to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is set to conclude in December 2023. Trials are already underway in the Aarey to BKC segment, with public access expected in early 2024. The entire Aqua Line is slated to open its doors to commuters by the end of 2024.
As of now, nine crucial trains, pivotal for the commencement of Phase 1, are in position, with additional train sets scheduled for delivery. Remarkably, 86% of the Aqua Line’s overall work, spanning both phases, has been completed. Phase 1, from Aarey to BKC, boasts a progress rate of 93%, with civil work nearing 98-99% completion. The current focus is on implementing essential systems like ventilation, lifts, escalators, and entry/exit points.
Mumbai Metro Line 3 Phase 2 Status
Phase 2, from BKC to Colaba, faces unique challenges, especially in densely populated areas such as Girgaum, Kalbadevi, Prabhadevi, and Dadar. Innovative approaches, including the time-consuming New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) Technology, have been employed to ensure seamless progress. Despite challenges, the project stands at an impressive 80% completion rate.
Mumbai Metro Line 3 Opening
With over 90% completion and ongoing trials in Phase 1, the eagerly awaited Mumbai Metro Aqua Line 3 is poised to begin operations in early 2024. The entire 33.5 km stretch, connecting Colaba to SEEPZ, is set to be accessible to the public by the end of the same year, marking a monumental leap in Mumbai’s metro infrastructure.
